GPA, averages and study maths
These are the everyday maths tools: percentages, marks and averages, standard deviation, and grades on the 4.0 GPA scale. Every one of them prints its formula on the page and works through an example, so a result can be checked by hand rather than taken on trust.
The GPA calculator follows the 4.0 scale used by most Tanzanian and East African universities, where each grade carries both a point value and a credit weighting. If your institution uses a different scale, compare the formula on the page before relying on the total.
This is the one hub on the site that publishes no Tanzanian figures and cites no authority, and that is deliberate. Nothing here is a rate set by a regulator: a percentage, a mean, a standard deviation and a date difference are arithmetic, and a GPA is whatever scale the institution has adopted. Attaching a source to a calculation like that would look like authority without being any. The GPA tool states the 4.0 scale it uses and the formula it applies, so you can see at a glance whether it matches your own college's rules — and if it does not, the formula is the part to compare, not the total.
What these tools are good for is the arithmetic that surrounds study and paperwork: working out what mark is needed to lift an average, what a weighting does to a final grade, how much a set of numbers varies around its mean, and how many days lie between two dates — a tenancy, a notice period, a project deadline, an exam timetable.
Which calculator to use
Working out a GPA or a weighted average
Use the GPA Calculator. It takes each course's credit weighting and grade, so a three-credit course moves the total three times as much as a one-credit course — enter the credits your institution records.
Marks, percentages and averages
Use the Percentage Calculator for what a mark is worth out of a total, or what a score needs to be to reach a target, and the Average Calculator for the mean of a set of marks. Standard Deviation shows how tightly the marks cluster, which the mean alone hides.
Dates and ages
Use the Date Difference Calculator for the number of days between two dates, and the Age Calculator for an age in years, months and days — useful for forms that ask for an exact age on a specific date.
Common mistakes here
- Ignoring credit weightings. Averaging the grade points without weighting them by credits gives the wrong GPA whenever courses carry different credit values, which is most semesters.
- Assuming every institution uses the same 4.0 scale. Grade point values and the treatment of retakes differ between universities; the GPA page states the scale it applies so it can be checked against your own regulations.
- Counting a date difference as inclusive of both end days when the form you are filling in does not. A 30-day notice period from 1 March may end on 30 March or 31 March depending on the convention — the tool counts the elapsed days between the two dates it is given.
Worked examples
A weighted GPA, step by step
Four courses: an A (4.0) at 3 credits, a B (3.0) at 3 credits, a B+ (3.5) at 2 credits and a C (2.0) at 1 credit. Grade points total (4.0 × 3) + (3.0 × 3) + (3.5 × 2) + (2.0 × 1) = 12 + 9 + 7 + 2 = 30 over 9 credits, giving a GPA of 3.33. Averaging the four grade points unweighted would give 3.13 — a different answer, which is why the credits matter.
Percentage change on a mark
A mark rises from 48 to 60 out of 100. The change is (60 − 48) ÷ 48 × 100 = 25%, which is the improvement in relative terms — the mark itself moved 12 percentage points. The percentage calculator distinguishes the two, because an exam report usually means the second.
