How it works

To add VAT, multiply the net amount by (1 + rate/100). To remove VAT from a gross amount, divide by (1 + rate/100) to get the net amount; the VAT is the difference. Tanzania's standard VAT rate is 18%.

Add: total = amount × (1 + rate/100) · Remove: net = amount ÷ (1 + rate/100)

Worked examples

  • Adding 18% to a 100,000 TZS net price

Joseph runs a hardware shop in Mbeya and quotes most customers a price that already includes VAT.

An item priced 100,000 TZS excl. VAT plus 18% is 118,000 TZS, with 18,000 TZS VAT.

  • Extracting VAT from a 118,000 TZS gross price

The reverse of Joseph's quote: a customer hands him a gross figure and he needs the VAT inside it.

A 118,000 TZS gross price is 100,000 TZS excl. VAT, with 18,000 TZS VAT.

What this assumes, and where it does not apply

What it assumes

  • The standard VAT rate of 18% is applied to the amount you enter.
  • Adding VAT multiplies the net amount by 1.18; removing it divides the gross amount by 1.18.

Where the result does not apply

  • Zero-rated and exempt supplies are not distinguished: some goods and services are not charged at the standard rate.
  • Does not produce a VAT return or handle input tax claims - it is arithmetic on one amount.
  • Where a price is quoted as inclusive or exclusive of VAT, the invoice, not this tool, settles which applies.
