How it works
Each letter grade maps to grade points (A = 4.0, B = 3.0, etc.). Multiply each course's grade points by its credit hours, sum the results, and divide by the total credit hours.

Weighted average
An A (3 credits), a B (3 credits) and an A- (4 credits) gives (12 + 9 + 14.8) ÷ 10 = 3.58 GPA.
Unweighted
If all courses carry equal weight, GPA is simply the average of the grade points.
