How it works
Add up all the numbers and divide by how many there are. This is the arithmetic mean — the most common form of average.

An average where one value is much larger
The mean of 5, 5, 5 and 85 is 25 as well - the same average as the set above, which is what a mean hides. The standard deviation calculator shows that difference.
The median when a mean misleads
The mean of 5, 5, 5 and 85 is 25, but the median is 5. If most values sit low and one is very high, the median describes a typical value and the mean describes the total divided by the count.
What this assumes, and where it does not apply
What it assumes
- The mean is the sum of the values divided by how many there are.
- Every value counts equally; a value entered twice is counted twice.
- The average here is the arithmetic mean. It is not the median, the mode or a weighted average.
Where the result does not apply
- The mean is not the median: with a few very large or very small values the two diverge, and the median may describe the set better.
- Does not weight values: a credit-weighted average needs the GPA calculator.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate an average?
Add all the numbers together and divide by the total count. For example, 10 + 20 + 30 = 60, and 60 ÷ 3 = 20.
What is the difference between mean, median and mode?
The mean is the average from dividing the sum by the count. The median is the middle value, and the mode is the most common value.
Can I enter negative numbers?
Yes, negative numbers are included in the average.
What is the difference between the mean and the median?
The mean adds the values and divides by how many there are; the median is the middle value once they are ordered. One very large value pulls the mean up and leaves the median almost unchanged.
Can an average fall outside the range of my numbers?
No. The arithmetic mean always sits between the smallest and the largest value, unless you are averaging something that is not a plain list of numbers.
