How it works

A percentage is a fraction of 100. To find a percentage of a number, divide the percentage by 100 and multiply by the whole. To express one number as a percentage of another, divide the part by the whole and multiply by 100.

Part = (Percentage ÷ 100) × Whole

Worked examples

What is 15% of 50?
(15 ÷ 100) × 50 = 7.5. So 15% of 50 is 7.5.
50 is what percent of 200?
(50 ÷ 200) × 100 = 25%. So 50 is 25% of 200.
A rise and an equal fall do not cancel
Start at 200, add 50% to reach 300, then take 50% off 300 and you are left with 150 rather than 200. Each percentage is applied to the number in front of it, and the second one is taken from the larger figure, so the fall removes more than the rise added.

What it assumes

The base being taken as 100% is the number you enter: check whether a discount, tax or fee is applied before or after another adjustment.
Percentage change is measured against the starting value, not the final one.
Each percentage change is applied to the base you give for that step, so two changes in a row only cancel when the bases they are applied to are equal.

Where the result does not apply

A percentage applied repeatedly to a changing base needs the compound interest calculator, not this one.
Percentage points and percent are different measures: 10% to 15% is 5 percentage points but a 50% increase.
Adding two percentages together and applying the total in one step is wrong for successive changes: a 10% reduction followed by a 5% reduction removes 14.5% in total, not 15%.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate a percentage?

Divide the part by the whole, then multiply by 100. For example, 45 out of 60 is (45 ÷ 60) × 100 = 75%.

How do I find X% of a number?

Multiply the number by X and divide by 100. For example, 20% of 80 is (20 × 80) ÷ 100 = 16.

How do I calculate percentage change?

Subtract the old value from the new value, divide by the old value, and multiply by 100. A positive result is an increase; a negative result is a decrease.

What is a percentage point vs a percent?

A percentage point is the arithmetic difference between two percentages. Going from 10% to 15% is a 5-percentage-point increase, but a 50% relative increase.

Can a percentage be more than 100?

Yes. 150% of 40 is 60, and a value that grows from 200 to 300 is 150% of its old figure, an increase of 50%. A percentage above 100 describes an amount larger than the whole it is compared with.
