How it works

Each operator publishes a fee that already includes the 10% excise duty and 18% VAT, so that fee is the total you pay. Cashing out at an agent additionally attracts a banded government withdrawal levy; sending money does not.

Total = published fee (tax-inclusive) + withdrawal levy (cash-out only)

Worked examples

Withdrawing 10,000 TZS from M-Pesa at an agent
Fatuma sells produce at Kariakoo market in Dar es Salaam and draws cash at an agent to pay for stock.
Withdrawing 10,000 TZS from M-Pesa at an agent costs about 1,552 TZS (fee 1,450 + withdrawal levy 102), so you'd receive about 8,448 TZS.
Sending 50,000 TZS on Airtel Money
The same week, she sends money to a supplier on Airtel Money instead of paying cash.
Sending 50,000 TZS via Airtel Money costs 680 TZS (tax already included), so you'd pay 50,680 TZS.

What this assumes, and where it does not apply

What it assumes

The bands applied are the charges recorded for each operator on the date shown above the tables, and those figures already include the 10% excise duty and 18% VAT.
One operator — Mixx by Yas — publishes its charges as a document you can read yourself (its Customer Tariffs, fees from 1 July 2025). The other four publish no equivalent table, so confirm their current charge in the app or with an agent before a large transaction.
The government withdrawal levy is added on agent cash-out only; sending money is exempt from it.

Where the result does not apply

Tariffs are set by the operators and change without notice: check the verification date on the fee tables before relying on an exact figure.
Does not cover merchant payments, bank-to-wallet transfers, or charges made by the receiving side.
Rounding at the operator's end, and any promotion or waiver in force on the day, can change what you actually pay.

Fee tables

Fees below are the charges recorded for each operator on 8 September 2026, and they already include the 10% excise duty and 18% VAT. For withdrawals, the calculator adds the separate government withdrawal levy. Only Mixx by Yas publishes its charges as a tariff you can read; the other operators publish no equivalent table, so confirm with your operator before relying on an exact figure. Frequently asked questions

How are mobile money fees calculated in Tanzania?

The operator charges a fee by amount band, and that published fee already includes the 10% excise duty and 18% VAT. Withdrawing cash at an agent also adds a banded government levy.

Is there a levy on sending money?

No. The government withdrawal levy applies only to agent cash-out; sending money (P2P, cross-network, to bank) is exempt from the levy.

Which provider is cheapest?

It depends on the amount. Small M-Pesa sends now start at 10 TZS, so T-Pesa and HaloPesa are often cheapest for small sends; use the fee comparison tool to see which provider is cheapest for your exact amount.
