How it works

Your hourly rate is your annual salary divided by the total hours you work in a year. A standard full-time schedule is 40 hours per week for 52 weeks, or 2,080 hours per year.

Worked examples

• 60,000 a year over 2,080 hours

  A 60,000 salary at 40 hours/week for 52 weeks equals 60,000 ÷ 2,080 = 28.85 per hour.

• The same salary over 48 working weeks

  A 60,000 salary at 40 hours a week for 52 weeks is 28.85 an hour. Over 48 working weeks the same salary is 31.25 an hour, because the same money is spread over fewer paid hours.

• Part-time hours on the same salary

  Halving the working week to 20 hours while keeping the 60,000 salary gives 60,000 divided by 1,040 = 57.69 an hour, exactly twice the full-time figure. The annual amount is unchanged, so the hourly rate moves only with the hours entered.

What this assumes, and where it does not apply

What it assumes

• Hourly pay is the salary divided by the hours you enter, so both must describe the same period - a monthly salary needs hours per month.
• Gross pay only: no deductions are applied.
• The same number of hours is assumed in every working week, so a rota with short weeks and long weeks will not produce a single rate.

Where the result does not apply

• Unpaid overtime, allowances, bonuses and benefits are not included.
• For a salaried worker the hourly figure ignores paid leave, so it is not directly comparable with a contractor's hourly rate.
• A shift rota that pays a night premium or a weekend premium uses different rates for different hours, so one average hourly figure does not reproduce the payslip.
