Converters
Metric & imperial units, time zones
Unit converters for the measurements that come up in daily life: length, weight, temperature, area, volume, speed, data storage, time, power, energy and pressure. Each dimension page explains the unit system, what every unit is used for, and the exact conversion factors — most of which are definitions rather than measurements.
Tanzania uses metric units for almost everything: kilometers on the roads, hectares for land, kilograms in the market. Imperial units mostly appear on imported goods, in recipes written for the United States, and in engineering specifications. Every pair page states its multiplier in both directions and works through examples.
The conversions on these pages are definitions, not measurements, which is why they are the one part of the site with no authority to cite and nothing that goes out of date. An inch is exactly 25.4 millimetres by international agreement, a kilogram is exactly 1,000 grams, and a litre is exactly 1,000 millilitres. Temperature is the exception in form rather than in kind: Celsius and Fahrenheit are offset scales, so the conversion is a multiplication and an addition rather than a single factor, and the pair pages show that formula rather than a bare number.
Where a conversion does involve an approximation, the page says so rather than hiding it. The energy converter is the clearest case: it covers joules, calories and kilowatt-hours, and the Tanzanian reference points it uses — what a unit of electricity costs, what an appliance draws over a month — rest on TANESCO tariffs, which do change. Those figures carry their own verified date, which is a different kind of claim from the exactness of the unit factors beside them.
Which calculator to use
A single conversion
Use the converter for the dimension you are in — length, weight, temperature, area, volume, speed, data, time, power, energy or pressure. Enter a value and the pair pages show the multiplier in both directions plus a table of common values.
Converting something you will be billed for
Use the Energy Converter. Converting joules or calories into kilowatt-hours is what makes an appliance's consumption comparable with a TANESCO bill, and the guide on what electricity costs in Tanzania works through a household example with the current tariff and its date.
Electrical work
Use Amps to Watts. It applies watts = amps × volts, which needs the supply voltage — in Tanzania that is 230 V for domestic supply, and getting the voltage wrong scales the answer wrongly.
Working across time zones
Use the Time Zone Converter. Tanzania is UTC+3 all year with no daylight saving, so the offset to most of the world changes twice a year even though Tanzania's own clock does not.
Common mistakes here
- Converting temperature with a single multiplier. Celsius to Fahrenheit is (× 9/5) + 32 — the addition cannot be dropped, and doing so gives an answer that is only right at 0 °C.
- Mixing US and imperial units. A US gallon is about 3.785 litres and an imperial gallon about 4.546: the pages label them separately for that reason, and the British spellings redirect to the American-named pages rather than silently converting to a different unit.
- Treating metric tonnes and US short tons as the same thing. A tonne is 1,000 kg; a short ton is about 907 kg — a 9% difference that matters on a freight invoice.
- Using 240 V for Tanzanian domestic electricity. The supply here is 230 V, and the amps-to-watts answer moves with it.
- Assuming the electricity figures on the energy page are as fixed as the unit factors. The conversion factors are definitions; the tariffs beside them are published rates that are re-checked and dated.
Worked examples
An exact definitional conversion
1 inch = 25.4 millimetres exactly, by international agreement in 1959. So 12 inches is 304.8 mm, and 100 km is 62.137 miles using 1 mile = 1.609344 km exactly. Nothing here is rounded except the display.
The temperature formula in use
30 °C is (30 × 9/5) + 32 = 86 °F. The same formula in reverse — (86 − 32) × 5/9 = 30 — is what the temperature pair pages apply in both directions, which is why they show the offset rather than a single factor.

Unit converters
Length Converter
Convert between metric and imperial length units — millimeters, centimeters, meters, kilometers, inches, feet, yards, miles and nautical miles.
Weight & Mass Converter
Convert between metric and imperial weight and mass units — milligrams, grams, kilograms, tonnes, ounces, pounds and stones.
Temperature Converter
Convert between Celsius, Fahrenheit and Kelvin. Temperature is an affine scale, so conversions use both a multiplier and an offset.

Convert between metric and imperial area units — square meters, square kilometers, hectares, acres, square feet, square yards and more.
Volume Converter
Convert between metric and imperial volume units — milliliters, liters, cubic meters, gallons, quarts, pints, fluid ounces and cups.
Speed Converter
Convert between speed units — meters per second, kilometers per hour, miles per hour, knots and feet per second. Free instant converter.
Data Storage Converter
Convert between digital storage units — bits, bytes, kilobytes, megabytes, gigabytes, terabytes and petabytes. Uses binary (1,024) multiples.
