About time conversions
Time units are fixed multiples of the second — the SI base unit — as far as the week. Past that the calendar stops being simple arithmetic: months run from 28 to 31 days and years from 365 to 366, so an exact conversion is impossible without naming the dates involved.
To stay honest, this converter treats a month as the average Gregorian month of 30.4375 days and a year as 365.25 days, the average including leap years. Those are the right figures for converting a rate or a duration — turning a monthly salary into an annual one, for instance — but they are not a date calculation. What each unit is and where it is normally used. Everything here is converted through the seconds.
- Milliseconds (ms)
- A millisecond is one thousandth of a second. It is used for timing in computing, sport and audio or network latency — a blink lasts around 100 milliseconds.
- Seconds (s)
- The second is the SI base unit of time, defined by the caesium-133 atomic transition. Every other time unit here is derived from it.
- Minutes (min)
- A minute is 60 seconds. It is used for everyday durations — cooking times, journey legs, waiting periods and the billing intervals on prepaid services.
- Hours (h)
- An hour is 60 minutes, or 3,600 seconds. Working time, travel schedules, generator run time and electricity consumption are normally measured in hours.
- Days (d)
- A day is 24 hours, or 86,400 seconds. It is the usual unit for durations longer than a few hours — delivery windows, rental periods, project deadlines.
- Weeks (wk)
- A week is 7 days, or 604,800 seconds. It is the standard cycle for rent, wages and project milestones in Tanzania and most countries.
- Months (avg) (mo)
- Here a month is the average Gregorian month: 30.4375 days, or 2,629,800 seconds. Calendar months run from 28 to 31 days, so any month conversion is an average rather than an exact date calculation.
- Years (avg) (yr)
- Here a year is 365.25 days, or 31,557,600 seconds — the average Gregorian year including leap years. A particular calendar year is either 365 or 366 days.
