How it works

PSSSF is the mandatory pension fund for public-sector employees. 5% of your salary is deducted as the employee share and your employer contributes 15% (20% total). The retirement pension is estimated using 1/580 × months of service × your annual pensionable emoluments (APE).

Worked examples

  • A public-sector salary of 1,000,000 TZS

    Neema, who teaches in Morogoro on 1,000,000 TZS a month.

    A 1,000,000 TZS gross salary deducts 50,000 TZS employee PSSSF and the employer adds 150,000 TZS, giving about 834,500 TZS take-home after PAYE.

  • 180 months of service on 12,000,000 TZS a year

    The same teacher at the end of a full career, with fifteen years of contributions behind her.

    180 months of service with an annual pensionable emolument of 12,000,000 TZS gives an estimated gratuity of about 3,724,000 TZS.

What this assumes, and where it does not apply

What it assumes

  • PSSSF is 5% of gross salary from the employee and 15% from the employer, for public-service employees.
  • PAYE is charged on the salary after the 5% employee contribution, on the current TRA monthly resident bands.
  • The retirement estimate uses the pensionable service and emoluments you enter, not a projected career.

Where the result does not apply

  • Not the private-sector scheme: NSSF is 10% from each side - use the NSSF calculator for that.
  • The gratuity and monthly pension are estimates under the formula as published; only the Fund can confirm what a member will actually receive.
  • A retiree before the scheme's retirement age may receive a reduced pension, which this estimate does not model.
  • Other deductions from pay (HESLB, loans, advances) are not included.
