How it works

P is current savings, C the annual contribution, r the annual return rate, and n the number of years until retirement. The formula compounds your current savings and contributions with interest.

FV = P(1+r)ⁿ + C · ((1+r)ⁿ − 1) ÷ r

  • Example

    Starting at 30 with 10,000 saved, adding 5,000 a year at 7% until 65 grows to roughly 800,000.

Frequently asked questions

How much do I need to retire?

A common rule of thumb is 25× your annual expenses, but it depends on lifestyle, location and other income.

Does this account for inflation?

No. Use a real (inflation-adjusted) return rate, e.g. 5–6%, to see today's purchasing power.

What is a safe withdrawal rate?

The 4% rule suggests withdrawing about 4% of your portfolio in the first year, adjusted for inflation.
