How it works
TRA charges a flat 250,000 TZS registration tax for a motor vehicle of any cylinder capacity. The licence fee on first registration steps by engine size — 200,000 TZS for 501–1,500 cc, 250,000 for 1,501–2,500 cc and 300,000 above that, or 50,000 for a motorcycle, tricycle or bajaji. The HIV Response Levy also steps by engine size, from 50,000 to 200,000 TZS. Electric and hybrid vehicles are charged on power output instead, in their own classes.

Example
Registering a 1,500 cc car for the first time costs 550,000 TZS: 250,000 TZS registration tax, 200,000 TZS licence fee (501 – 1,500 cc) and 100,000 TZS HIV Response Levy. Adding a change of ownership adds 50,000 TZS.

Are electric vehicles charged differently?
Yes. Electric and hybrid vehicles are registered and licensed by power output rather than engine capacity, with their own fee classes.
