How it works

The converter fetches the latest exchange rates and multiplies your amount by the rate to the target currency. Rates are indicative and may differ slightly from your bank.

Converted = Amount × Exchange rate

Worked examples

Converting USD to TZS
At a feed rate of 2,500 TZS per USD, 100 USD is 250,000 TZS. That feed rate is a mid-market rate between banks; the counter rate you are offered will be lower, and the gap is the provider's margin. The figures here illustrate the arithmetic - the converter above shows the live rate and its date.
What the margin costs on the way back
At the same rate, 1,000,000 TZS is 400 USD. If a bureau offers 390 USD instead, that 10 USD gap is a 2.5% margin - on a transfer this size usually more than any commission the provider advertises.

What it assumes

Rates are indicative mid-market rates from a single public feed, refreshed at most once an hour and cached on the server.
Cross-rates are calculated through the US dollar base rather than quoted directly, so they can differ slightly from a rate quoted for the pair itself.

Where the result does not apply

Not the rate you will be offered: banks, bureaux and mobile-money services add a margin, and the total you receive is what matters.
Not an offer to deal, and not an official reference rate - the Bank of Tanzania publishes those.
For a large transfer, check the rate's date: an indicative rate from yesterday is evidence about yesterday's market.
