How it works
The tip is a percentage of the pre-tax bill. The total is the bill plus tip, and dividing by the number of people gives each person's share.

A 50 bill with a 15% tip
A bill of 50 with a 15% tip gives a 7.50 tip and a 57.50 total.

That same bill split 2 ways is 28.75 per person, tip included.
A bill with a service charge already added
A 50 bill with a 10% service charge already on it totals 55, and a 15% tip on 55 is 8.25 rather than the 7.50 the same percentage gives on the 50 alone. Tipping on the bill before the service charge avoids paying a tip on the charge itself.
What this assumes, and where it does not apply
What it assumes
- The tip percentage applies to the bill as entered, before any split between people.
- Splitting divides the total including the tip equally between the number of people.
- The number of people is a whole number, so the per-person share is an exact division of the total and may not come to a round amount.
Where the result does not apply
- Tipping expectations vary by venue and country - the percentage is yours to choose.
- If a service charge is already on the bill, check it before adding a tip on top.
- It does not apply where a venue forbids tipping or where tips are pooled and shared by the employer, because the amount a particular person receives is then not the figure entered here.
