How it works

The amount saved is the original price multiplied by the discount percentage. Subtract the savings from the original price to get the final price.

Savings = Price × (Discount % ÷ 100)

Worked examples

  • 100 with 20% off

An item priced 100 with 20% off saves 20 and costs 80.

  • 250 with 30% off

An item priced 250 at 30% off saves 75 and costs 175.

  • A stacked discount is not the sum

20 per cent off and then a further 10 per cent off is 28 per cent off a 100 price: 100 becomes 80, then 72. Adding the two percentages would give 70, which is not what the till charges.

What this assumes, and where it does not apply

What it assumes

  • The discount applies to the marked price as entered.
  • A second discount is applied to the already-discounted price, which is how stacked promotions normally work.
  • Each discount is a percentage of the price it is applied to, so the order of two stacked discounts does not change the result.

Where the result does not apply

  • Stacked discounts multiply rather than add: 20% then 10% is 28% off, not 30%.
  • Buy-one-get-one and multi-buy offers are not percentage discounts and are not modelled here.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate 20% off?

Multiply the price by 0.20 to get the savings, then subtract from the original price.

What does 'percent off' mean?

It means the price is reduced by that percentage of the original price.

How do I find the original price from a sale price?

Divide the sale price by (1 − discount percentage). For example, 80 after 20% off is 80 ÷ 0.80 = 100.

What is 20% off and then another 10% off?

Multiply the keeping factors: 0.80 x 0.90 = 0.72, so the final price is 72% of the original, which is 28% off rather than 30%.

How do I work out the discount percentage I was given?

Divide the saving by the original price and multiply by 100. Saving 15 on a 60 item is 15 / 60 = 0.25, or 25% off.
