How it works

Divide the trip distance by your fuel efficiency to get the fuel volume needed (gallons in US units, liters in metric), then multiply by the fuel price (per gallon or per liter) for the total cost.

Fuel needed = Distance ÷ Efficiency · Cost = Fuel needed × Price

Worked examples

  • US example

A 300-mile trip at 25 MPG uses 12 gallons; at 3.50 per gallon the fuel costs 42.

  • Metric example

A 300 km trip at 15 km/L uses 20 liters; at 2,500 per liter the fuel costs 50,000.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate fuel cost for a trip?

Divide the distance by your fuel efficiency (MPG or km/L), then multiply by the fuel price (per gallon or per liter).

What is good fuel efficiency?

Modern compact cars often exceed 30 MPG (about 12–13 km/L), while trucks and SUVs are typically lower.

Does this work for km and liters?

Yes. Switch the Units selector to Metric to use kilometers, km/L and a price per liter.
