Stones to Milligrams
One stones is 6,350,293.18 milligrams, and one milligrams is 1.5747e-7 stones.
A milligram is one thousandth of a gram. It is used for medicine doses, laboratory work, water-quality readings and any measurement of trace amounts.
- 1 st= 6,350,293.18 mg
- 5 st= 31,751,465.9 mg
- 10 st= 63,502,931.8 mg
Stones to Grams
One stones is 6,350.29318 grams, and one grams is 1.5747e-4 stones.
A gram is one thousandth of a kilogram. It is used for food portions, recipe ingredients, jewellery and postal items, and it is the unit most kitchen scales show.
- 1 st= 6,350.29318 g
- 5 st= 31,751.4659 g
- 10 st= 63,502.9318 g
A gram is one thousandth of a kilogram, and it is defined through the kilogram, the SI base unit of mass. Metric prefixes scale it by powers of ten.
Grams appear on kitchen scales for food portions and recipe ingredients, on postal and courier labels for small packages, and in jewellery listings where the mass of metal or stones is stated.
Stones to Kilograms
One stones is 6.350293 kilograms, and one kilograms is 0.157473 stones.
The kilogram is the SI base unit of mass. It is used for body weight, market produce, luggage allowances and cargo, and it is the unit a metric kitchen or market scale shows.
- 1 st= 6.350293 kg
- 5 st= 31.751466 kg
- 10 st= 63.502932 kg
The kilogram is the SI base unit of mass, and every other metric mass unit is defined from it by powers of ten. One kilogram equals 1,000 grams exactly.
Kilograms are the everyday unit for body weight, market produce and cooking quantities, and they set luggage allowances and freight charges on shipping documents and airline tickets.
Stones to Tonnes (metric)
One stones is 0.00635 tonnes (metric), and one tonnes (metric) is 157.473044 stones.
A metric tonne is 1,000 kilograms. It is used for shipping, freight, harvests and industrial quantities. It is not the same as a US short ton (907.18 kg) or a UK long ton (1,016.05 kg).
- 1 st= 0.00635 t
- 5 st= 0.031751 t
- 10 st= 0.063503 t
Stones to Ounces
One stones is 224 ounces, and one ounces is 0.004464 stones.
An ounce is exactly 28.349523125 grams, one sixteenth of a pound. It is used for food portions and postal weights, and precious metals use the different troy ounce of 31.1035 g.
- 1 st= 224 oz
- 5 st= 1,120 oz
- 10 st= 2,240 oz
An ounce is exactly 28.349523125 grams and one sixteenth of a pound, so sixteen ounces make one pound. That definition makes it the avoirdupois ounce, the unit used for ordinary trade.
Ounces appear on postal and courier weight bands, on food packaging and recipe cards, and in the jewellery trade, though precious metals are quoted in the troy ounce.
Stones to Pounds
One stones is 14 pounds, and one pounds is 0.071429 stones.
A pound is exactly 0.45359237 kilograms, or 16 ounces. It is the everyday weight unit in the United States and remains common for body weight and packaged goods elsewhere.
- 1 st= 14 lb
- 5 st= 70 lb
- 10 st= 140 lb
A pound is exactly 0.45359237 kilograms, or 453.59237 grams, and it contains sixteen ounces of 28.349523125 grams each. This is the avoirdupois pound used for general goods.
Pounds are the everyday weight unit in the United States, and they remain common for body weight, packaged food, courier parcels and freight wherever imperial measures are still used.
What stones are used for
A stone is exactly 14 pounds, or 6.35029318 kilograms. It is used almost exclusively in the UK and Ireland, mainly for body weight.
A stone is exactly 14 pounds, which equals 6.35029318 kilograms, or 6,350.29318 grams. It is a body-weight unit used in the United Kingdom and Ireland, not part of the metric system.
Stones are used almost exclusively for adult body weight, and they appear on bathroom scales and in medical records in the United Kingdom and Ireland. Produce and freight are never sold by the stone.
The stone is exact by definition at 14 pounds, and the kilogram figure follows from the exact pound. Because results are rounded for display, a stone to kilogram round trip can differ in the last digit.
Reading a stone figure as pounds is the common error: a scale showing 12 stone has measured 168 pounds, not 12. Stones are conventional for body weight, while kilograms serve medical dosing and trade.
Stones sit between pounds and kilograms in size, and mixing them up causes large errors: a stone value is 14 times its pound value and 6.35029318 times its kilogram value. Metric records therefore avoid stones.
Metric conversions are exact. Results are displayed rounded, so values at the extreme ends of the scale — milligrams and tonnes — carry fewer significant digits than the middle of the range.
Between the metric units a weight conversion is a power of a thousand, so grams to kilograms and kilograms to tonnes are decimal shifts. The imperial units are all defined against the kilogram, which makes every metric-to-imperial pair a multiplication with the same factor at any size.
The dimension where this goes wrong is the ounce, because the same word covers two different weights. An avoirdupois ounce is one sixteenth of a pound and is the one used for food and parcels; a troy ounce is about 10% heavier (31.1035 g) and is used for precious metals. A price per ounce is meaningless until you know which ounce is meant.
To check a weight conversion, convert the result back, or go through the pound or the kilogram as a middle step. The commonest error is converting a figure stated in pounds into kilograms and then comparing it with a figure that was already in kilograms, which doubles or halves nothing and merely hides the mistake.

Real quantities, converted into stones.
The most a packet declared between 500 g and 1 kg may fall short under Tanzanian weights and measures rules
15 g = 0.002362 st
Table IIIC of the 2019 regulations allows an individual deficiency of 1.5%, or 15 g, on a nominal net content between 500 g and 1 kg. Regulation 179 separately requires the average net content of a whole lot to be at least what the packet declares, so the tolerance is on single packets rather than the batch.
