What these units are
Kilograms (kg). The kilogram is the SI base unit of mass. It is used for body weight, market produce, luggage allowances and cargo, and it is the unit a metric kitchen or market scale shows.
Pounds (lb). A pound is exactly 0.45359237 kilograms, or 16 ounces. It is the everyday weight unit in the United States and remains common for body weight and packaged goods elsewhere.
Metric conversions are exact. Results are displayed rounded, so values at the extreme ends of the scale — milligrams and tonnes — carry fewer significant digits than the middle of the range.
Converting Kilograms to Pounds in practice
Working in kilograms
The kilogram is the SI base unit of mass, and every other metric mass unit is defined from it by powers of ten. One kilogram equals 1,000 grams exactly.
Kilograms are the everyday unit for body weight, market produce and cooking quantities, and they set luggage allowances and freight charges on shipping documents and airline tickets.
Conversions between kilograms, grams and tonnes are exact decimal shifts. Imperial factors are exact by definition, yet displayed results are rounded, so converting to pounds and back can change the last digit.
A common mistake is treating a stone figure as pounds. One stone is 14 pounds, so a reading of 12 stone is 168 pounds, not 12 pounds. For trade and medicine, kilograms are the safer unit because their subdivisions are decimal.
Because pounds carry a larger number for the same mass, a body-weight figure can look plausible in the wrong unit. Grams serve small cooking amounts, and tonnes serve freight, so the choice follows the size of the load.
Reading the result in pounds
A pound is exactly 0.45359237 kilograms, or 453.59237 grams, and it contains sixteen ounces of 28.349523125 grams each. This is the avoirdupois pound used for general goods.
Pounds are the everyday weight unit in the United States, and they remain common for body weight, packaged food, courier parcels and freight wherever imperial measures are still used.
The pound to kilogram factor is exact by definition, and metric mass units relate to one another by exact decimal shifts. Display rounding means a round trip can end one digit away.
A stone figure is often mistaken for a pound on body-weight charts; one stone is 14 pounds, so 11 stone is 154 pounds. Pounds suit small and medium weights, while tonnes suit freight.
The sibling most easily mistaken for a pound is the kilogram, since both describe body weight and produce. Stones give a smaller number still, so a value quoted without its unit cannot be judged.
Checking a kilograms to pounds conversion
Between the metric units a weight conversion is a power of a thousand, so grams to kilograms and kilograms to tonnes are decimal shifts. The imperial units are all defined against the kilogram, which makes every metric-to-imperial pair a multiplication with the same factor at any size.
The dimension where this goes wrong is the ounce, because the same word covers two different weights. An avoirdupois ounce is one sixteenth of a pound and is the one used for food and parcels; a troy ounce is about 10% heavier (31.1035 g) and is used for precious metals. A price per ounce is meaningless until you know which ounce is meant.
To check a weight conversion, convert the result back, or go through the pound or the kilogram as a middle step. The commonest error is converting a figure stated in pounds into kilograms and then comparing it with a figure that was already in kilograms, which doubles or halves nothing and merely hides the mistake.

The most a packet declared between 500 g and 1 kg may fall short under Tanzanian weights and measures rules
15 g = 0.015 kg = 0.033069 lb
Table IIIC of the 2019 regulations allows an individual deficiency of 1.5%, or 15 g, on a nominal net content between 500 g and 1 kg. Regulation 179 separately requires the average net content of a whole lot to be at least what the packet declares, so the tolerance is on single packets rather than the batch.
